December Holiday Social:
Our December party for members of Newcomers & Neighbors of Greater Winston Salem will be Friday, December 8, 2017. The festivities will begin at 6:00 p.m. at Millhaven Landing Clubhouse, 3491 Waterwheel Circle, Winston Salem 27103. Members wishing to attend should sign up on the form which the president will pass around at the general meeting November 28, or by email to jan.fish115@hotmail.co.uk. Guests are welcome if we have their name and payment.
The cost to attend the social is $5.00 per person and your payment by December 1 will guarantee your place at the party. You can pay with cash, or check made payable to Newcomers and Neighbors and delivered to the treasurer Kathy Pietroski.
To keep expenses down we ask that you bring a 'potluck' dish —i.e. an appetizer, side, salad, main, or dessert. By indicating your contribution on the sign-up sheet, we hope to have a wide selection of delicious food with something for everyone. There will be tea, coffee, and, soft drinks available, but please feel free to bring your own adult beverage.
There is parking available close to the clubhouse; however, we recommend carpooling since space may be limited. Please do not park on the grass.
Annual Holiday Giving: Again this year at the Holiday Social we will collect $10 gift cards from our members, to contribute to the Salvation Army as gifts for the teenagers in their program. If you would like to provide one or more gift cards, but are unable to attend the Social, cards can be brought to the November general meeting -or- given to President Jean Isaac, or Pam Bloom by December 8. Suggested sources for gift cards are Walmart, Target, Walgreens, and Kohls. We look forward to seeing you December 8, giving us all the opportunity to welcome and get to know new members, mingle, make friends and enjoy the party in the festive atmosphere of the Millhaven Landing Clubhouse.
Special thanks to those who have or will be helping the social coordinators make this event possible.

November Program:
TOPIC: READWS
and the Augustine Literacy Project
SPEAKER: Kris A. Cox
SPEAKER: Kris A. Cox
The mission of the Augustine Literacy
Project® is to improve the reading, writing, and spelling abilities of low
income children and teens who struggle with literacy skills. The Project trains
and supports volunteer tutors who provide free, long-term, one-to-one
instruction. ALP methodology is based on the research-based Orton-Gillingham
approach and uses materials developed by Wilson Language Training Corporation®
and ALP.
Orton-Gillingham is a structured,
multisensory, phonetic teaching approach that has been proven to work with
those who have language-related learning difficulties. Lessons include the five
essential components of research-based reading instruction as defined by the
National Reading Panel: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and
comprehension.
A 7-day, 42-hour training class is
offered in the fall and winter each year. Three practice lessons with guidance
from an experienced tutor coach are included during the training, and two more
practice lessons with guidance from an experienced tutor in the week or two
following the class.
Kris A. Cox will be our presenter. She
is the Executive Director of READ ••WRITE ••SPELL (READWS) in Winston-Salem,
NC. In addition to her duties at READWS, Kris is the president of the North
Carolina chapter of the International Dyslexia Association board. Kris has a
passion for advocating for ALL struggling readers, writers, and spellers. She
believes that Orton-Gillingham training should be available to all elementary
teachers and Orton-Gillingham instruction should be accessible to all students.
Kris is a licensed teacher in birth-6th grade. She is married to her husband,
Chris Cox, and has five children.

September Program:
What is the
Innovation Quarter and Why is it Important to Winston Salem?
Speaker: Chad Nolan - Director of
Operations for the Innovative Quarter
Have you wondered
about the transformation of the old factories and warehouses of the R.J.
Reynolds Tobacco Company in downtown Winston-Salem? They have been revamped
into a center of entrepreneurial activity known as the Innovation Quarter. Join
us on September 26th, when Mr. Chad Nolan will introduce us to this emerging
institution, described as the latest incarnation of Winston Salem’s legacy of
creativity, collaboration and cooperation.
Located in a unique
urban setting in the heart of Winston Salem, the Innovation Quarter is a hub
for biomedical science, information technology, advanced materials and
engineering. Home to over 120 companies and collaborating with area colleges
and universities, the I.Q. employs over 3,400 workers engaged in scientific
research, product development, higher education and workforce training.
What makes the
Innovation Quarter unique are the opportunities it affords scientists,
entrepreneurs, and business leaders to collaborate in developing new products
and ideas. More than labs and offices, the Innovation Quarter has created an
ecosystem that allows ideas to take hold while supporting creativity,
innovation, and sustained business growth. At the same time, the Innovation
Quarter reaches out to the community, offering cultural and wellness programs
on its 330-acre campus. Another part of its mission is to give back to the
surrounding area, especially neighborhoods in east Winston Salem. Part of this
initiative is SciTech, an enrichment program in science, math and technology
for middle school students.
Join your fellow
Newcomers and Neighbors in learning about what has been identified as one of
the fastest-growing urban-based districts for innovation in the United
States.
Chad Nolan is
Director of Operations for the Innovative Quarter. In this capacity, he
oversees finance, accounting and operations management, a broad portfolio that
includes human resources, legal contracting, and performance metrics
management. Previous positions in Winston Salem include Director of External
Agencies and Affairs for Piedmont Triad Research Park, Manager of Wake Forest
University Health Sciences Subsidiaries and External Agencies, and principal
business officer for the Center for Applied Learning. Mr. Nolan graduated from
Appalachian State University with a BS/BA in Health Care Management and
received a Master in Health Administration from the Medical University of South
Carolina.
