General Meetings are held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1416 Bolton Street (just off Silas Creek Parkway via the Bolton Street exit) at 10 a.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month, except August and December.

SPEAKER:    Marcheta Keefer, Director of Marketing and
    Communications, Visit Winston-Salem

The Shell Station, constructed in the late 1930s in the shape of a shell, serviced gas guzzlers for many years; Art-o-Mat Machines are retired cigarette vending machines that have been converted to dispense art.  This creative enterprise started in Winston-Salem and today there are many active machines throughout the world; George Black mastered the craft of handmade bricks and opened his own brickyard in the 1920s.  His craftsmanship can be seen at Salem College, Baptist Hospital, Old Salem and many homes.  What do Mr. Black, the Shell Station and the Art-O-Mat Machine have in common?  They are all to be found right here in Winston-Salem.

Ms. Keefer holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Central Florida in Orlando.  She has been with the Center for a year and a half, but has over 27 years of experience in the tourism industry.  The Center, located at 200 Brookstown Avenue (next to the Historic Brookstown Inn), features brochures, travel guides and maps about Winston-Salem, the region and other vacation destinations around the state.

Ms. Keefer will provide an overview of Visit Winston-Salem and the services it offers residents and visitors alike, and will also provide us with copies of the Visitor Guides, and the Center’s “hot off the press” Wine & Dine Guide.  Come to the meeting, hear Ms. Keefer and find out some other little known facts about Winston-Salem.

A Morning of Wine and Poetry with Joe Mills

Poetry and wine, these are a few of our favorite things... and when he spoke to our group a few years ago, Joe Mills became one of our favorite guests. He is an entertaining and informative source on wineries and wine growing in North Carolina (with his wife Danielle Tarmey, Joe has authored a second edition of his well received "A Guide to NC's Wineries"). Joe has traveled widely through our state's wine country and, in his book, provides wonderful stories and vignettes about these very individual and remarkable destinations.

Joe teaches at the North Carolina School of the Arts and has authored four books of original poetry. His latest work is "Sending Christmas Cards to Huck and Hamlet," which joins his earlier titles "Somewhere During the Spin Cycle," "Angels, Thieves, and Winemakers," and "Love and Other Collisions." Joe is also Poet In Residence at Salem College.

With a Ph.D. in Literature from the University of California, Davis, Joe has also published academic criticism of some very well known American personalities and essayists, including Ben Franklin, Mark Twain, George S. Schuyler, James Thurber, Woody Allen, and the Marx Brothers.

Don't miss this meeting!  You will enjoy an entertaining presentation from an expert in life's finer things and you just may be inspired to take your own road trip to sample some wine! Joe promises to read us some excerpts from the recently published "Sending Christmas Cards to Huck and Hamlet."
