April Program: Forsyth Audubon
Speaker: Wendy “Big Bird” Hawkins
You are invited to attend a bird talk given by Wendy Hawkins. She looks forward to enlightening everyone on the many activities, conservation projects and volunteer opportunities available through Forsyth Audubon, such as: Wood Thrush, Brown-headed Nuthatch, Bird-Friendly Communities, Bird-Friendly Yards, Lights Out, Education Team, and NC Ambassador, a climate change awareness and bird advocacy program. She will share her passion for birds, with time for questions.
Wendy is Education Team chair and Lights Out coordinator for Forsyth Audubon. She is originally from California, where she spent 10 years in the early childhood profession. In 2008, she and her family moved to the rural town of Eutawville, SC, to live a slower-paced life and be closer to her husband’s family. They moved to Winston-Salem in 2013 to allow their son to attend UNCSA.
Wendy enjoys studying birds and any information bird-related. Already a member of the National Audubon Society, she became an active member in the local Forsyth County chapter when she met Kim Brand, who works for NC Audubon and is an active leader in Forsyth Audubon. Wendy recently became a NC Audubon Ambassador, led her first official Audubon bird walk this winter, and regularly contacts government officials to request their support of bird-friendly legislation.
Forsyth Audubon is a local chapter of the National Audubon Society, a non-profit organization that focuses on wildlife conservation with an emphasis on birds. Audubon Society of Forsyth County was chartered in the early 1970s and has been making a positive impact on the local community. Partnering with Habitat for Humanity, they have been helping birds via education, their support of a multitude of conservation projects, advocating related legislation, and informing the public by leading bird walks and birding trips.
Due to the wide appeal of this topic, members are encouraged to bring guests
to this meeting. Spouses, family members and friends are welcome.

March Program: Feathering the Nests of People Transitioning…
Speakers: Jan Barbee and Joanna Britt, Co-Founders of GreeNest
Last fall, Newcomers & Neighbors of Winston-Salem donated $500 to greeNest, a unique program that provides home furnishings for people transitioning, from homelessness to sustainable housing. At our March meeting, sisters and co-founders, Jan Barbee and Joanna Britt, will tell us more about this local start-up that they began just under a year ago. greeNest will celebrate its first anniversary April 8.
“After bouncing from shelter to shelter and living on the streets, many homeless families are left with little of their previous lives intact,” the sisters explain. “When finally offered affordable housing, they are confronted with the starkness of an empty house. With few personal belongings, a house is just not a home,” they continue. “No family should have to lie down on a cold, hard floor.”
For a small fee, greeNest provides household furnishings to these individuals and families. Volunteers sort, clean, and organize furniture and household goods that have been donated by people in the community. They also stage a showroom from which participants make their selections. By paying a nominal fee, participants in the program become owners, and not merely recipients.
greeNest is a natural fit for Jan and Joanna, who recount growing up with a resourceful mother who found a use and re-use for everything. It is not surprising that finding a way to transform items that are no longer needed by some families into the beginnings of a new home for other families became their passion.

Topic: Piedmont Opera – A Little Night Music Speaker: Jamie Albritten
Perhaps you're already an opera buff, or maybe you're just curious about our own Piedmont Opera. Please join us at our monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 23, and listen to Jamie Albritten tell us about the opera company and the upcoming March presentation of A Little Night Music. Piedmont Opera, the second largest opera company in North Carolina, produces the highest quality productions by using international, national, regional and local professional singers and technicians. It currently attracts patrons from sixteen states and communities throughout the Piedmont, Upstate and Virginia.
Jamie Albritten, the General Director and Artistic Director of Piedmont Opera, is a gifted teacher, conductor, and singer. He won several awards for teaching excellence during his prior tenure at University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA), where he was the Artistic Director of the A. J. Fletcher Opera Institute. Visiting artists often comment on his high artistic standards. This reputation allows the company to attract artists with nationally and internationally recognized careers. He has conducted all of the Piedmont Opera's productions since 2004.
Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music, set in turn of the century Sweden, will be performed at the Stevens Center on March 18, 20 and 22. Hopefully many of you will plan to attend, especially after hearing the engaging and charming Jamie Albritten tell us all about it.

Topic: Back to School – Without the Exams! Speaker: Wanda Duncan
Have you ever dreamed of going back to school, without the pressures of term papers, exams, and final grades? Our January speaker will introduce us to an opportunity to pursue fascinating subjects with dynamic instructors and mature, intellectually engaged fellow students with none of those old pressures.
Join us on January 26th to hear Wanda Duncan, Assistant Director of Lifelong Learning at Wake Forest University, describe the relatively new program of personal enrichment courses offered by the university.
Created by the Liberal Studies Program of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences at Wake Forest, in conjunction with the Arts Council of Winston-Salem & Forsyth County, the program features some of the university’s favorite professors. Although many cities offer university-based lifelong learning programs, this collaboration between the University and the Arts Council provides a unique approach that sets Winston-Salem apart.
Classes explore a range of topics of global and personal relevance, tapping subjects as diverse as religion, history, law, music and psychology. In addition to regular courses, participants are invited to a reception with a special presentation. Last fall, for example, members heard Eric Wilson’s engaging presentation on Moby Dick: Why No One Wants to Read It, and Why Everyone Should.
Spring courses have not yet been announced, but Ms. Duncan will have complete information on upcoming programs and registration procedures at the meeting. Presenter: Sarah Hunter re: Candle Tea: Merging Two Moravian Traditions
One can’t live in Winston-Salem very long before encountering Moravian history and culture. That heritage becomes especially evident during the December holiday season, when we hear about Candle Tea, Love Feasts, and the Moravian Christmas putz. November’s program provides an opportunity for us to become more informed observers and even participants in these traditions.
Candle Tea is sponsored by the Women’s Fellowship of the Home Moravian Church. Sarah Hunter, who chairs this year’s Candle Tea, will talk with us about the Moravian customs as well as provide us with a brief history of the Moravians and the founding of Salem. We will learn why candles are important to Moravians at Christmas and why the putz is a highlight of the Candle Tea. She will also explain why Candle Tea has become a tradition for the larger Winston-Salem community, not just for the Moravians.
In addition to chairing this year’s Candle Tea committee, Ms. Hunter has a strong commitment to understanding our area’s heritage. She served as president of the Wachovia Historical Society and as a trustee to Salem Academy and College. She has been a member of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Planning Board, and she founded the Washington Park Neighborhood Association. During her career in public relations and marketing, she worked for a number of local organizations, including Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Old Salem, Inc., Salem Academy and College, and Babcock Graduate School of Management at Wake Forest University. Ten years ago, Ms. Hunter started Simply Organized, Inc., through which she assists people to get organized but specializes in helping seniors downsize. Her insights are summarized in her book, Downsize...Start Now!, described as a guide for “boomers” and seniors who want to simplify and organize their homes and lives, whether that means aging in place or relocating to a smaller home.
