GENERAL MEETING: Tuesday, May 27, 2014

General Meetings are a time to welcome visitors, hear guest speakers and discuss club business. All residents of Greater Winston-Salem are invited to join us. General Meetings are held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1416 Bolton Street (just off Silas Creek Parkway via the Bolton Street exit) at 10AM on the fourth Tuesday of each month, except August and December.

Presenters: Julie Kolischak, freelance producer / writer / artist, from the Winston-Salem Writers
On Poetry in Plain Sight
Winston-Salem Writers is a group of writers who write fiction, non-fiction, plays and poetry, and who care about the art and craft of writing. They offer programs, workshops, critique groups, open mic nights, web-based writing, contests and writers’ nights out, as well as a weekly newsletter. They welcome writers and poets at any stage of their art – from beginner to published author – and they welcome non-members to their meetings, contests and newsletter.
Professionally, Julie specializes in projects for Corporate Communications, as well as Field Production for outside companies. She is the Program Chair for Winston-Salem Writers’ premier community initiative, Poetry in Plain Sight. Julie will discuss the origins of Poetry in Plain Sight and give an overview of its growth since its beginning in January 2013, its unique impact upon the community, and its ability to attract writers and their organizations statewide to Winston-Salem.
Poetry in Plain Sight brings poetry to downtown Winston-Salem. Four poems are chosen each month and displayed on posters in sixteen shop windows throughout Winston-Salem’s Arts District and downtown. Poetry in Plain Sight also extends the Word Up! Program that the late Rodney Holman, a prime mover of Poetry in Plain Sight, created for Winston-Salem Transit Authority (WSTA) buses. In 2014, Winston-Salem Writers received an Innovative Projects Grant from The Art’s Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County to place posters in all WSTA buses as an extension of the current Poetry in Plain Sight program.

Presenters: Hubert and Marcia Barney, Clemmons NC, on “Ballroom Dancing”
Hubert and Marcia began to ballroom dance “much later than they should have”; it took Marcia five years to convince Hubert to give it a try. Once they took their first lesson 15 years ago, no further persuasion was needed on her part. They have been ballroom dancers ever since and have been teaching ballroom dancing for almost a decade. Dancing is a daily activity that helps keep them fit physically, mentally, and emotionally.
They are active in many community and dance organizations and are both past presidents and board members of Piedmont NC USA Dance—a chapter of the national USA Dance organization. A non-profit, volunteer organization, it is composed of ballroom dancers who love to dance, and take delight in sharing the experience with others interested in dancing. Membership in Piedmont USA Dance is open to persons of all ages. Local USA Dance members range in age from 14 to 85. Their dance experience covers an equally wide span. Some members are beginners; others have been enjoying ballroom dancing for decades. The chapter meets on the fourth Sunday of each month for a Ballroom Sunday dance at The Jerry Long Family YMCA in Clemmons NC.
For our program, the Barneys will tell us a little about ballroom dancing, give a short demonstration, and teach us a few dance steps.
