Protect Yourself from Scams and Fraud
Speaker: Carol Young
Outreach Coordinator, NCAG

Have you ever received a telephone call, email message, or letter telling you that you have won a foreign lottery or urging you to apply for a sweepstakes because you’re already a finalist? Has someone from a foreign country asked you to help get millions of dollars out of his or her country in return for a reward?

North Carolinians lose millions of dollars each year to consumer scams, including scams associated with sweepstakes, charities, identity theft and more. Carol Young, Outreach Coordinator for the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office, will join us at our general meeting on Tuesday, October 25. She will help us to become “scam smart” - to learn the facts on scams and easy tips to avoid becoming a victim.

Ms. Young has worked for various agencies of the State of North Carolina for over 32 years. From 2003-2007, and beginning again in 2013, her primary work focus has been on consumer protection awareness of scams and frauds. A highlight of her career was serving as scheduler and citizen services coordinator for Governor Purdue.

Crosby Scholars Community Partnership

Speaker: Mona Wooten, President and CEO

The Crosby Scholars Community Partnership helps students in public middle and high schools prepare themselves academically, personally, and financially for college admission. The Crosby Scholar students must meet required academic standards, make a commitment to remain drug-free, attend Crosby Scholars Academy, and participate in volunteer community service, leadership development training, career exploration, and financial aid workshops designed to help both the students and their parents.

For those students who meet financial and academic criteria, the program provides “last dollar” scholarships to bridge the gap between the cost of college attendance and other forms of financial assistance. Since its inception, the program has awarded $5.1 million dollars in last dollar grant assistance and has leveraged an additional $50 million in financial assistance.

The program has a 24 year history in partnership with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, the Winston-Salem Foundation, the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust. It is also an affiliate of Goodwill of Northwest North Carolina, so Crosby Scholar programs are now available in Rowan County and Iredell County. As a United Way Partner Agency, it collaborates with youth serving agencies throughout the community.

Last year, 857 seniors were guided through the college admissions process and into higher education institutions. Enrollment in grades 6-12 topped 9,700 students in the 2016-2017 school year. Annual recruitment occurs in early fall, when new students in grades 6-10 are invited to join the program. All Forsyth County students attending public school in grades 6-10 are automatically accepted.

Mona Wooten Lovett joined Crosby Scholars as the Executive Director in September 1996 and currently serves as the President and CEO — celebrating 20 years with the organization.

July Program: Substance Use Disorders: Not Just a Man’s Issue
Speaker: Kristin O’Leary, Director of Hawley House

Our July speaker, Kristin O’Leary, is Vice President of Supportive Services at the YWCA and Director of Hawley House, a residential recovery facility for women 18 years and older who have been diagnosed with a substance use disorder. Until the early nineties, most research on substance use disorders focused on men. It is true that men are more likely than women to become addicts, but women face tougher challenges once they become addicted. Women develop medical or social consequences of addiction faster than men, often find it harder to quit using addictive substances, and are more susceptible to relapse.
Residents live at Hawley House for a period of nine-to-twelve months and receive up to six months of aftercare. Affiliated with the Gateway YWCA, Hawley House provides housing, meals, counseling, transportation to work, and case management. Hawley House accepts women struggling with addiction to alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, pain pills, and benzodiazepines (anti-anxiety drugs, such as Valium and Xanax). This program is the only licensed women’s substance abuse recovery facility in Forsyth County.
Ms. O’Leary will tell us about the Hawley House program, some of the pathways leading women to substance use disorders, and the challenges they face surrounding their addiction.
A combat veteran of the United States Army, Kristin O’Leary served four years as a medic after completing high school. She worked ten years in the medical field and another ten in retail management before her passion for supporting women in crisis led her to the YWCA. As Vice President of Supportive Service, Kristin directs two programs: Hawley House and Project New Start. She will celebrate ten years at the YWCA next February.

June Program:  Bookmarks! The Annual Festival of Books and Authors — and So Much More!
Speaker:  Ginger Hendricks, MFA, Executive Director of Bookmarks

Many of us know about BookmarksAnnual Festival of Books and Authors. We have volunteered at several venues of this highly successful event, which attracted 12,500 participants last September. The N&N Book Club also sponsored a table at Bookmark’s Moveable Feast, a January event at which book lovers sit eight to a table and welcome a new author every ten minutes.
Those events are only part of the organizations literary contribution to the Triad. Want to learn more? Don’t miss our June 28 General Meeting, where Ginger Hendricks, Executive Director of Bookmarks, will broaden our awareness of other programs designed to celebrate literary arts and to connect readers and writers.
Ms. Hendricks will share insights about the Authors in Schools Program, through which Bookmarks works with area teachers to incorporate authors and their books into the curriculum. In recent years, featured authors have included Isabel Allende, Lemony Snicket, Tavis Smiley, and Gregory Maguire. We will hear about the Summer Reading Program, targeting students from kindergarten through high school, as well as Bookmarks’ plans to launch an independent bookstore.
Ginger Hendricks was named Executive Director of Bookmarks in January 2010. She graduated from Salem College and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Vermont College. Her fiction and nonfiction have been published in local and national journals. Before coming to Bookmarks, she served as Director of the Center for Women Writers at Salem College, Coordinator of Cultural Events at Salem College, and Assistant to the Dean of Cultural and Special Programs at Elon University.
