GENERAL MEETING: Tuesday, June 23, 2015

General Meetings are a time to welcome visitors, hear guest speakers and discuss club business. We invite women who are new or established residents of Greater Winston-Salem to visit us. General Meetings are held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1416 Bolton Street, W-S 27103 (just off Silas Creek Parkway via the Bolton Street exit) at 10AM on the fourth Tuesday of each month, except August and December.

Presenters: Elizabeth Miller and Joe Rick
Big Brothers Big Sisters Services, Inc.

For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As the nation’s largest donor- and volunteer-supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18, in communities across the country. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.

Elizabeth Miller has been a Big Sister with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Forsyth and Davie County since 2003. A member of the BIGS Council, Elizabeth also volunteers with Fleet Feet Sports Winston-Salem and Susan G. Komen of Northwest, NC. A Winston-Salem resident, Elizabeth works at Southern Pharmacy in Kernersville as their Human Resources Coordinator. Elizabeth’s “Little” is Ariyanna, 13, who will still occasionally admit that Elizabeth is “cool.” Her favorite things to do with Elizabeth are grocery shopping and trying new restaurants.
Joe Rick has been a Big Brother for two young men in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Forsyth and Davie County program since 2006. As a Vice-Chair and one of the founders of the BIGS Council, Joe also has created a staff volunteer program within his department at UNC School of the Arts called the Big Help where his team volunteers at non-profits in the Winston-Salem community. A Winston-Salem resident since 2003, Joe works at UNC School of the Arts as their Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and also works part-time as an Academic Coach at Wake Forest University in the Student-Athlete Services Department. Joe’s “Littles” are Emmanuel, 15, and Gerald, 17. The most favorite things to do with both typically involve sports or community service. Joe says that being involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters has helped him transition into Winston-Salem and provided a family network since he is originally from North Dakota. Joe was the 2013 NC Big of the Year and nominee for the 2013 National Big Brother of the Year.
