GENERAL MEETING: Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at 10 am

General Meetings are a time to welcome visitors, hear guest speakers and discuss club business. We invite women who are new or established residents of Greater Winston-Salem to visit us. General Meetings are held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1416 Bolton Street, W-S 27103 (just off Silas Creek Parkway via the Bolton Street exit) at 10AM on the fourth Tuesday of each month, except August and December.

Presenter: Cynthia Doxey Green, Ph.D. - RESEARCHING YOUR FAMILY HISTORY

Many of the anecdotes in Edward Kelsey Moore’s The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat came from memories of holiday dinners at which Moore listened to his mother and aunts share family stories as they worked in the kitchen. Like Moore, most of us grew up hearing stories at family gatherings. Some made us laugh out loud, and others brought bittersweet tears. Then there are the stories that are buried, reflecting a general consensus that some things are best left unsaid. These stories can be collected and shaped into a family memory that will be cherished for years to come. They can enliven a family tree documenting births, marriages, and deaths across the generations, but only if someone undertakes to document their family’s narrative — a daunting task, as many of us have discovered.

This month’s speaker will provide the motivation and tools to get us started researching and writing our family histories. She will point us to resources in the community and available online from our own computers. So bring your questions – and stumbling blocks – to our September meeting.

Cynthia Doxey Green, Ph.D., is an expert in family history and genealogy. She spent most of her childhood and young adulthood in Salt Lake City, Utah, although she has also lived in Barcelona, Spain, and Cambridge, England. International travel, she tells us, provided opportunities “for learning more about her ancestors and appreciating the lives they lived.”

After receiving a B.A. and M.S. in Child and Family Development from the University of Utah and a M.Phil. in Education from Cambridge University, Cindy completed her Ph.D. in Family Studies from Brigham Young University. She taught Family History Classes at Brigham Young for 13 years, with a research emphasis on British Emigration, English genealogy, and British Church History. After marrying and moving to the southern United States, she continued to share her knowledge and enthusiasm for family history. She has presented at a number of genealogy and family history conferences and currently volunteers at the Family History Center, 4780 Westchester Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
